It’s been a minute since I’ve binged a television series. After re-subscribing to Netflix to access my personal data, I discovered that it’s possible to watch at 150% speed. Since that’s my mode of operation on YouTube, I figured I’d give it a try on a random recommendation. Baby Reindeer was it.
I recalled some controversy about this show, or maybe some comedians on some podcasts had mentioned it in passing. Looking into it I was surprised that the controversy was not about the content of the program, but about how viewers were trying to figure out who the real-life counterparts of the story characters were.
Regarding the show: I know that there are comedians who get into comedy as a form of self-therapy. Gadd treats the viewer to seven episodes worth of trauma dumping that had its chuckle-worthy moments but overall, I was annoyed by how stupid the protagonist was. The narrative threads around the lead’s sexual transformation were tangled, to say the least.
And that’s just it: the less I say, the better.
