Taken for Granted on Vancouver Island

Turn a tap,
endless potable water
comes up to the third floor
—even higher!
If only we could afford it.

(not haunted by the ghosts
of unceded territory)

Winters
when pipes don’t freeze
but the unhoused do.

The occasional forest may burn
but the ground rarely shakes
enough to knock a book from a shelf, and
bombs aren’t falling.

The only wars our youth die in
are culture- and drug-related and
easily ignored.
