Director Coralie Fargeat has said she draws inspiration from David Cronenberg, and that vibe is running on maximum frequency throughout The Substance. Calling this film “stylish” is an understatement. Most of the frames are clean enough to eat from, though given the visceral content you’d be excused if you begged off.
I haven’t seen a body horror this terrifying and well-realized in decades. Not for the weak of stomach.
