Mythic Quest

I shouldn’t have started watching Mythic Quest, but it came in convenient twenty-four-minute chunks—coincidentally, the same amount of time it took Rooster to return with air freight cargo in Grand Theft Auto Online. It was that perfect storm of depression distraction, just enough to take my mind off the impending end of my academic career.

But this show didn’t do it for me at all. Because I’ve developed video games and know how that process works, the representation of the industry fell flat for me. Yes, it was labeled a comedy, but I don’t think I was supposed to laugh at the parts I laughed at.

There were, however, two excellent episodes that had almost nothing to do with the main plot: the one about the goth girl’s game and the one about the head writer’s past. Both were stellar. Just a shame the other thirty-eight-odd episodes were so forgettable.

If you know nothing about how the sausage is made when it comes to video games, and would enjoy a watered-down version of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you might find a lot to like about Mythic Quest. I, as a lifelong gamer and game developer of fifteen years, didn’t.
