May 2021

May 11, 2021

Time has lost a lot of its meaning, and yet somehow it's become so much more meaningful. I'll leave that to you to figure out.

Today was the 49th consecutive day of livestreaming on Twitch, and the first day in 49 where I took an evening off. I look back at the last post before this one and the plan has worked with only minor adjustments.

This is the first time I've sat down to write a journal in two months and two days, and my fingers are already protesting.

Regarding the 'streams, moving to subscriber-only for all participation (both chatting and viewing) has been a real big-brain move. The community is developing at a beautiful pace and exactly the way I'd hope. No shitters, just real people enjoying good conversation and decent gameplay. I've had zero stress or any compunctions about charging for what I've been doing, and that's largely due to the sheer volume of content I'm producing. It's certainly not the best method for "growth", whatever that means, but it's been amazing for stability and consistency.

I just wrote then deleted a paragraph of random thoughts.

Anyway, if you've been enjoying the shows and are one of the few to breathe the rarified air of the inside of our little clubhouse, I want to give you a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek, pandemic be damned. See you tomorrow!

I just put in the 69th consecutive day of livestreaming on Twitch. After more than two months of "subscriber only" broadcasts—meaning that only audience members who've thrown 5 USD into my hat get to watch the show—I eased the restrictions. Now anyone can watch, but it'll still cost a fiver to actively participate in the community. There's still no video-on-demand, and no clipping. You'll just have to trust me that I'm putting in the hours. I'm going to keep the window cracked like this for a while and see what happens.

There are still 99 days left in this project. The last couple of weeks were very strange, but really good fuel for the creative furnace. I've learned a lot about myself, the politics of community, and if nothing else this "going live on the internet" thing has been an incredible introspective journey. At least it's producing a rock-steady playlist.

I've also quit the dozen or so Discord servers I was in, closed out my private messages, and deleted the app. As always, if you need to get in touch with me you can call, send me an e-mail, or DM me on Twitter.
