THINGS LEARNED WHILE HUMPING BOXES
Near the end of this year I took a job outside of the Acre forĀ numerous reasons. In addition to those:
To prove that it was possible to go through the whole “getting hired” thing.
To be reminded of the value of independent creative freedom.
The psychological burden of having a job and obligations external to creative development is real. While the time spent in the UPS truck was enjoyable, the lack of total freedom that came with it was not so great. When the work got slow enough to think I found myself back in the classrooms of Berlitz, where I first dreamed of having my own full-time personal creative space. It was a very important wake-up call.
Also: mad respect to all the creative folks who’ve managed to produce great works while holding down other full- or part-time jobs. It really adds a significant difficulty factor to the equation.
The net result of working for “the man” for a month (aside from the drinking money) has been a renewed vigor for game development and writing. At this time it’s difficult to say how long the effect will last, but the first quarter of 2015 feels very promising from where I’m standing.
As always the basic goals remain the same: produce books and videogames of high quality that are worth your time and money.
Thank you very much for your continued support and interest, and happy holidays from the Dark Acre. May all your new year’s wishes come true!
