What sound this fearful rhythm?
The pounding of drums
the clapping of hands
the stamping of feet
a clarion call
to dance or
to battle
I know not which.

Irresistible fire of tribal reunion
animals we have been
animals we remain,
inescapable nature.

Watch from beyond,
outside the circle,
center of attention
within
and without.
